Hillside Willys
1201 (?) Liberty Street
Hillside, New Jersey
Jim Jakubik, owner of a 1968 CJ-5, grew up a stone's throw away from Hillside Willys and offered the following details in September 2004:
"The dealership was on the east side of Liberty Ave., between Herbert Ave. and Bloy St. It was right in the middle of the block. I'm 50 years old and can still remember the property today. Back around 1960, the dealership wasn't doing so well, with just a few used cars but no Jeeps. Even then as a kid, maybe 6 years old, I thought it was kind of sad. The one cool thing was the Willys sign. It was aqua green with big red letters. WILLYS! The sign had a curve to the top of it, with neon lights that didn't work. In this area of Liberty Ave, the roadway is flat, but from the front of the dealership to the back of the property was all downhill. The repair shop was down the hill in the back. The entire block has been built up, starting in the early 1960's. Condos and office buildings are where the dealership was located. Two family homes were built where the repair shop was."
Applying Jim's description to an online map service, the dealership address would have been approximately 1201 Liberty Ave., give or take a few digits. Many thanks to Jim for sharing his memories of this dealership.
