Refrigerators are a common part of any modern kitchen. It is easy to just put your food in the fridge and forget that your fridge is a complicated machine. Understanding the different parts of your refrigerator can help you take better care of it.

Compressor

The compressor on your refrigerator is responsible for moving the refrigerant throughout your fridge in order to keep everything cool. The compressor acts as a pump and a motor all at the same time.

Condenser

The condenser is made out of coils. The job of the coils is to release the heat from the inside of your refrigerator out into the environment. These coils are generally located on the back wall of your refrigerator. On some units, the condenser coils are actually located on the bottom of the fridge.

Keeping the condenser coils clean is important. When the condenser coils become covered with dust, hair, and lint, that can cause the condenser to not work. When the condenser coils are not working properly, that can stress out the compressor and cause it to work extra hard.

Clean the condenser coils a couple of times a year. To clean the condenser coil, you just need to use a vacuum to clean the coils and the fan for the condenser.

Evaporator

The evaporator is generally inside of the fridge. The evaporator is designed to take in the heat from your fridge, and this will help decrease its interior temperature. The evaporator is another coil; it is located on the back of your fridge or under your fridge near the condenser coil. Just like the condenser coil, you need to vacuum it in order to help it work effectively.

Thermostat

The thermostat helps control the temperature inside of your fridge. It drives the actions of the condenser, compressor, and the evaporator. The thermostat doesn't take a lot of effort to take care of. If you notice that the temperature inside of your fridge no longer remains consistent, you are going to want to change out the thermostat.

Gasket

The gasket is the material that goes around your fridge's door. The gasket helps keep the fridge sealed shut and maintains the temperature inside your fridge. Use a damp rag to clean the gasket once a month, getting between the folds. When the gasket becomes brittle or doesn't hold a seal, it should be replaced.

Understanding the different parts of your fridge can help you take better care of this appliance and ensure that it works and functions correctly. If anything breaks down, make sure to locate refrigerator repair services in your area.
